As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction gets closer, franchises are finalising the list of players they wish to retain. Though the number of retained players would depend upon the guidelines set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the franchises are reportedly moving ahead with their draft retention lists. After the Chennai Super Kings' reported retention list came out, the Delhi Capitals' priority of players has been made public in a report. The list suggests that skipper Rishabh Pant would be the franchise's No. 1 pick, ending the speculation about his potential reunion with Ricky Ponting at Punjab Kings.

After his appointment as the head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting opened up on his exit from the Delhi Capitals (DC) coaching setup, saying that his availability had become an issue and the franchise wanted him to operate as a full-time head coach. Ponting has been named the new head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) starting from IPL 2025, following his departure from Delhi Capitals two months ago, ending a seven-year stint with the franchise. Ponting becomes the third head coach in four seasons for Punjab Kings, who finished ninth in the 2024 IPL season. The team has not made the playoffs since 2014, when they were runners-up. One of Ponting's initial tasks will be to identify players for retention ahead of the next season, pending the finalisation of the IPL's retention rules.
Team India will tour Australia later in 2024 for a five-match Test rubber, hoping to secure a third straight series win Down Under. India have won the last two Test tours of Australia in 2018/19 and 2020/21, under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, respectively. In fact, 2014/15 was the last time when Australia beat India in any series home or away. As the build-up to the much-awaited clash is fast gaining momentum, former India batter Aakash Chopra has made a shocking revelation.
Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali called experienced spinner Nathan Lyon's comment about Australia winning the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series against India by 5-0 "stupid". On Tuesday, Lyon on the Willow Talk podcast answered a question by former Australian cricketer Brad Haddin and said, "My prediction is 5-0 to Australia." Basit slammed Lyon and stated that such remarks should not come from a cricketer. He even urged Ravichandran Ashwin to reply back to Lyon's comment. "I will only say one thing about Nathan Lyon's stupid statement that Australia will defeat India by six Tests, but only by words. In the past two series, India have dominated Australia. Such comments don't suit cricketers. Ricky Ponting or former cricketers can make such statements. I request Ashwin to reply back and say that India will defeat Australia by 5-0," Basit said on YouTube.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has been appointed Punjab Kings' head coach on a four-year contract ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the team said on Wednesday.
