Remco Evenepoel has been a polarising figure since even before he joined the professional ranks. Beyond Belgium, and the most cosmopolitan close followers of junior cycling, the first time many of us watched him race was at the 2019 Junior World Championships in Innsbruck. He won the time trial by more than a minute from Australian Luke Plapp.
Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) was taken to hospital after crashing into a tree at Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The Frenchman, who had made no secret of targeting the Ardennes classics, went down in a big pile-up with 60km remaining of the Belgian Monument.
Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) secured the overall win at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, with QuickStep-AlphaVinyl’s Fabio Jakobsen securing the stage 5 win. Jakobsen was assisted by teammates Remco Evenepoel and Yves Lampaert with three kilometres remaining, with the team lead-out man Michael Morkov also helping out at the death.
Matteo Moschetti won stage four of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana for Trek-Segafredo while Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) retained the overall lead. The Italian rider won the sprint finish in Torrevieja, as he dashed for the line with the perfect poise compared to his rivals.
Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) won stage 2 of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana in an impressive sprint display in Torrent. The Dutch rider was helped by exploiting the Intermarch-Wanty-Gobert grouping with a kilometre to go, and he timed his dash perfectly with 200m remaining, and nobody was able to close him down as the finishing line approached.
