Australian Open 2024: Daniil Medvedev Beats Alexander Zverev, Set To Face Jannik Sinner In Final

Daniil Medvedev battled into a third Australian Open final Friday with a come-from-behind five-set defeat of Alexander Zverev to set up a title match against Jannik Sinner. The never-say-die Russian third seed was in a precarious position on Rod Laver Arena but fought back to win 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 after four hours 18 minutes. Ice-cool Italian Sinner will be awaiting him in Sunday's title match after stunning defending champion Novak Djokovic in the other semi-final.

Daniil Medvedev 'Destroyed' By Australian Open Five-Setter

Two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev said he was "destroyed" physically after grinding past big-serving Hubert Hurkacz in five tough sets Wednesday, but would be fighting fit for his Australian Open semi-final. The Russian world number three eventually tamed the Polish ninth seed 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in draining heat on Rod Laver Arena after a contest lasting nearly four hours. Playing his 100th Grand Slam match, he is into an eighth major semi-final, but has only gone to win only one title -- at the 2021 US Open.

Daniil Medvedev On Fire At Australian Open Despite Late Finish Taking Toll

Two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev swept past Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime for a seventh straight time Saturday to power into the last 16 at the Australian Open despite feeling sluggish.  The Russian third seed was in the zone to win 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 and set up a clash against Portugal's world number 69 Nuno Borges, who upset Bulgarian 13th seed Grigor Dimitrov in four sets. It was a vastly different match from his late-night escape from two sets down against Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round, a contest that finished at 3:40am on Friday. Medvedev admitted the early-hours finish had taken its toll, saying he had not got to bed until 7:00 am. "It was not easy, I'm not feeling fresh, I'm not feeling 100 percent," said the Russian, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2021 Melbourne Park final and Rafael Nadal a year later.
