Wimbledon and 2022 grass-court season preview
Mischa Zverev said that his brother Alexander would look to emulate Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as he plans his return from the injury he suffered at the French Open. Nadal was Zverev’s opponent in the semi-finals at Roland-Garros last week as he rolled his ankle, and had to leave the court in a wheelchair. Reports earlier this week suggested that a ligament injury could keep him out for two months, and he would miss Wimbledon as a result.
Novak Djokovic will not be playing a grass court warm-up event following his quarter-final exit from the French Open and is instead set to come straight to Wimbledon. The Serb has not been in action since losing to Rafael Nadal in Paris and will not be getting any competition in before the next Grand Slam tournament, according to his coach.
Nadal is recovering at home after he underwent treatment on his injured left foot on Tuesday, as the French Open champion battles to be fit for Wimbledon. Nadal has returned to his house in Mallorca, less than three weeks before the start of Wimbledon on June 27.
Toni Nadal is backing Rafael Nadal to compete at Wimbledon this year despite his foot injury while his doctor says they will only know in a couple of days if his latest treatment is going according to plan.
Alexander Zverev has been told he could have prevented the severity of his freak French Open injury following his recent surgery. The world No 3 tore several ligaments in his ankle when he fell during his semi-final against Rafael Nadal but retired former world No 2 Tommy Haas has now told Zverev that he could have stopped the injury "ending so badly".
Rafael Nadal’s doctor, Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, admits his star patient’s ability to defy injury “would be a miracle for any normal person”. Nadal has twice defied a chronic foot problem in 2022 to win the Australian Open and then the French Open, while he also suffered a stress fracture in his rib prior to Roland-Garros.
Toni Nadal is confident that his nephew Rafael Nadal will appear at Wimbledon this year, despite his ongoing foot injury. While Toni is hopeful the 14-time French Open champion will be fit to compete at SW19, he stressed that a lot depends on the results of this new treatment, with the Spaniard playing through the pain barrier for a number of years.
