LONDON: Novak Djokovic made an impressive return after two months out of action as the Team Europe star thrashed Team World’s Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-3 with Roger Federer cheering him on at the Laver Cup on Saturday. Djokovic showed no signs of rust as he played for the first time since winning the seventh Wimbledon crown of his remarkable career in July.
Novak Djokovic crushed Frances Tiafoe 6-2 6-3 at the Laver Cup at the O2 on Saturday night in his first match since winning Wimbledon this summer. The former world No.1 was backed by Bjorn Borg as well as the rest of the famous Big Four: Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Team World's Taylor Fritz defeated Team Europe's Cameron Norrie to level the Laver Cup at 4-4 on Saturday as the tennis world dealt with the hangover from Roger Federer's emotional farewell party.
As the legendary Roger Federer stepped onto the court at the O2 Arena in London to play his final professional tennis match, there was an outpouring of emotions across the world. Even in countries like India, where the match began late in the night, several fans stayed up to watch the historic match as Federer teamed up with long-time rival and good friend Rafael Nadal to take on Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock in a doubles match. As the match was played out, Carlos Alcaraz, the newly crowned US Open champion, took to Twitter to basically live-tweet the whole game.
LONDON (AP) — Filling in for the retired Roger Federer at the Laver Cup, 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini put Team Europe back in front by edging Team World's Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal 7-6 (11), 4-6, 10-7 on Saturday.
As Roger Federer bid farewell to the game of tennis, there was an outpour of emotion from across the globe for one of the greatest of the game. One of those most distraught at his retirement was his long-time rival and teammate in his final professional match, Rafael Nadal, who was seen sitting next to Federer after their defeat in the Laver Cup doubles match, with both the legends in tears. While the picture evoked emotions from people from all walks of life, England pacer Stuart Broad saw the lighter side of it as he poked fun at his long-time bowling partner and friend, James Anderson.
Federer said a tearful goodbye to tennis late on Friday night when the 20-time Grand Slam champion and doubles partner Rafael Nadal were beaten by Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe at London's O2 Arena. The 41-year-old announced earlier this month that he would retire after the Laver Cup due to the knee problems that had kept him on the sidelines since Wimbledon in 2021.
