Is this the year someone works out how to stop Tadej Pogacar? The Slovenian two-time defending champion starts as a big favourite again, with the usual cast assembling to halt his three-peat bid. Primoz Roglic, the man who was cruelly unseated from yellow on the last competitive stage in 2020, and Geraint Thomas, the rejuvenated 2018 champion, are among those fancying a pop at the youngster – and both Ineos Grenadiers and Jumbo-Visma have assembled fierce squads in an attempt to crack him.
Primoz Roglic said he’s “super happy to be back in the action,” on the back of a successful day at Criterium du Dauphine, after a knee injury forced him to restructure his schedule. The Slovenian impressed on a key day in the Dauphine’s mountain stages, silencing any pre-race doubters, and is happy with how his form is progressing ahead of the Tour de France. Ad/> At Vaujany on Saturday, Roglic skipped clear of a weary GC group on the upper reaches of the final climb to showcase his growing form, which also put him in the yellow jersey, with the opportunity to win the Dauphine for the first time in Jumbo-Visma’s history.
Columbian cyclist Juan Sebastian Molano on Friday was disqualified from the Criterium du Dauphine for punching a fellow rider during the sixth stage. A video of Molano, who rides for the UAE team, punching France's Hugo Page went viral on social media. In the video, Molano can be seen complaining about something to Page, before punching the latter. Following the incident, Molano admitted his mistake, saying that he will "learn from it".
MONTBRISON, FRANCE: Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers won stage 4 of cycling’s Criterium du Dauphine on Wednesday edging his key rival Wout van Aert on the 31.9km time trial with a sizzling time of 35min 32sec.
Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) was involved in a very close call with his own team car on Stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia. Robbie McEwen had earlier described it as a “day from hell" for non-climbers, while fellow Eurosport expert Sean Kelly suggested the race could «lose some riders» due to the punishing climbs.
Remco Evenepoel believes that leading the Tour of the Basque Country with a day to go proves that he can compete with the best general classification riders. Evenepoel showed his class in the latter stages of the penultimate climb in Stage 5, where he brought seven riders with him except previous race leader Primoz Roglic. Ad/> It was Carlos Rodríguez that took home his first professional win from the breakaway, with Ineos Grenadiers team-mate and Stage 4 winner Dani Martínez taking second place – two seconds ahead of Evenepoel.
A Tadej Pogacar victory on the Ligurian coast could have killed cycling. It may sound like a bit of an overstatement but it’s probably true. Already a winner in his previous two Monuments, and already a winner in his first three WorldTour races of the season, Pogacar could have strangled the sport into submission with another display of dominance under the Italian sun.
