Highlights of the eighth day at the U.S. Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, at Flushing Meadows on Monday (times in GMT):
NEW YORK — Jessica Pegula eliminated two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-2 to get to her third major quarterfinal of 2022 and reach that round for the first time at the US Open.
Iga Swiatek, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Cameron Norrie are all in action on a stacked card at the US Open on Monday. World No. 1 Swiatek faces unseeded Jule Niemeier as both look to make the quarter-finals in New York for the first time.
In a classic contest between the contrasting styles of attack and defence, the 28-year-old Collins came out on top by firing rocket groundstrokes from both her forehand and backhand in front of an appreciative crowd in the day's final match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Collins, who finished runner-up at the Australian Open this year, will next face sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka in a battle of hardhitters for a spot in the quarter-finals. "This is one of my favourite slams. But didn't have my best results at this specific one," Collins, who beat two-time former champion Naomi Osaka in her opening round, said. "To be able to kind of have my best results that I've had here has been great. Obviously want to try to take it to the next level and do the best I can. With the way I'm playing, I've just got to take it one match at a time."
Widely-regarded as Nadal's Grand Slam heir apparent, the 19-year-old third seed Alcaraz defeated Jenson Brooksby of the United States 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 on the back of 46 winners. Alcaraz, a quarter-finalist in 2021, managed to break one of his tennis shoes as he slid to reach a ball mid-match. "It's the third time that I have done this. As you can see, I do a lot of sliding," he said.
Andrey Rublev won the final point in a match that lasted more than four hours and beat Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (10-7).
Petra Kvitova saved two match points before winning a final set tie-break to beat Garbine Muguruza in the US Open third round. With Muguruza holding match points at 5-3 and 6-5 in the third set, the Czech was able to rescue match points in both games before converting her own fourth one in the super tie-break to win 5-7 6-3 7-6 (12-10). Ad The No.21 seed has returned to the last 16 of the US Open for the seventh time in her career where she will meet No.8 seed Jessica Pegula.
Czech Petra Kvitova sent across 14 aces to down Spanish ninth seed Garbine Muguruza 5-7 6-3 7-6(10) in a thrilling third-round duel at the US Open Saturday.
