MELBOURNE : Australia bring an ageing squad and a few players short of fitness to the T20 World Cup but will have the same easygoing confidence that helped secure last year's test and ODI world championships.
Chief selector George Bailey and head coach Andrew McDonald were forced to take the field as substitute fielders during Australia's T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up match against Namibia on Tuesday. Australia currently have just 9 out of their 15 members at the World Cup with Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis taking a break following the IPL. As a result, head coach Andrew McDonald, assistants Brad Hodge and Andre Borovec along with chief selector George Bailey also served as substitute fielders during the match.
Kolkata Knight Riders clinched the IPL 2024 title after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the summit clash by eight wickets. Asked to bat first, SRH had a horrendous day as they were bundled out for 113 with Andre Russell and Mitchell Starc scalping three and two wickets respectively. KKR lifted their third title under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer after thumping Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final of the tournament with an 8-wicket win. In IPL 2024, the Kolkata-based franchise conceded only three defeats. Shreyas Iyer's side lost only against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

After participating in Sunday's IPL final, Cummins, Head, and Starc will travel back to Australia before re-joining the World Cup team. Among those spending time at home are Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, who were a part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's playoff run. When the Australian team travels to Barbados in preparation for their opening group game against Oman on June 5, those five are expected to arrive.
Australia is facing shortage of players and might be forced to use support staff as substitute fielders in the warm-up games of next month's T20 World Cup due to the low turnaround time between the IPL and the global showpiece. Australia are set to play two warm-up games against Namibia on Wednesday and the West Indies on Friday in Trinidad but they might have as few as eight players available for the two matches since most of them will take a break following their stint in the IPL playoffs.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder Sunil Narine has become the first player to win the 'Most Valuable Player' award in the Indian Premier League (IPL) thrice after beating the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final of the 2024 season. Narine won his first MVP award in the IPL 2012 after picking up 24 wickets, which was also his debut season. His second MVP came in the 2018 season of the tournament when he scored 357 runs and picked 17 wickets as well.
