Serena Williams stepped up her comeback as the American star powered to a second successive victory in the Eastbourne doubles with her partner Ons Jabeur on Wednesday. Williams and Tunisia's Jabeur defeated Shuko Aoyama and Chan Hao-ching 6-2, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon warm-up event at Devonshire Park. Serena, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, is playing her first tournament since she made a tearful, injury-enforced exit from Wimbledon last year.

EASTBOURNE, England: As “What A Feeling” boomed around Devonshire Park, Serena Williams strode onto center court at Eastbourne to a standing ovation for her first competitive tennis match in nearly a year.
Serena Williams made a winning return to tennis as she and doubles partner Ons Jabeur came from a set down to beat Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova 2-6 6-4 13-11 in the first round of the Eastbourne International. The 40-year-old was playing her first match since suffering a leg injury in the first round of Wimbledon in 2021, and, despite showing some signs of rustiness, she recovered quickly as the illustrious duo progressed in the tournament. Ad/> Williams, who will make her singles comeback at Wimbledon next week, admitted she «had a lot of fun» despite having to dig deep to avoid a shock early exit.
Serena Williams has admitted that there were times during her year-long battle for fitness that she could have called time on her career. But after a winning return in the doubles at Eastbourne, she is putting no limits on what she can still achieve in the game.
