PARIS — While the list of candidates capable of challenging top-ranked Jannik Sinner has been dwindling ahead of the French Open, there's a new face making waves on the ATP Tour who might be able to rise to the challenge.

PARIS: Novak Djokovic will set a record the moment he steps on court for his opening match at the French Open against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the night session on Sunday. Two days after his 39th birthday, Djokovic will play a men’s record 82nd Grand Slam tournament — one more than Roger Federer and Feliciano Lopez. For all his experience, though — he shares the record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles with Margaret Court — Djokovic comes to Roland Garros with hardly any match preparation. Djokovic lost to Croatian qualifier Dino Prižmić at the Italian Open in his only match on clay this year — after two months out due to a right shoulder injury. “I wanted to play more but my body was not allowing me,” Djokovic said, adding he “was far from ready to compete” in Rome. “But, still, I needed at least that one match just to have the score called by the chair umpire and have experience of the nerves before I eventually come to Roland Garros, which at that point I didn’t know if I was going to be able to play or not. “Thankfully, the response of the body and the preparation has been positive in the last 10 days, so here I am, and we’ll see what happens.” Djokovic will also tie French players Richard Gasquet and Antoine Gentian with a men’s record 22nd appearance at Roland Garros.

Sinner, the red-hot title favorite in the absence of injured rival Carlos Alcaraz, will start his bid for a maiden Roland Garros crown against French wildcard Clement Tabur, the world number 165. World number one Sinner is slated to meet big-hitting American fifth seed Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals. Daniil Medvedev is a possible semifinal opponent for the Italian. The Russian gave Sinner a rare scare in the Italian Open semis earlier this month before eventually succumbing in three sets. Djokovic will kick off his latest tilt at a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title against home player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Second seed Alexander Zverev is a potential semifinal opponent for Djokovic. The German has played Djokovic twice before at Roland Garros, suffering quarter-final defeats against the Serb in 2019 and last year. The stand-out first-round tie sees in-form French number one Arthur Fils take on former champion Stan Wawrinka, featuring at the tournament for the last time before retirement.

An early defeat by Dino Prizmic at the Italian Open this month and the decision to skip his Geneva title defense have left Djokovic with limited claycourt preparation ahead of the year’s second Grand Slam, which begins on Sunday. “It’s not ideal,” he said. “I don’t recall the last time I had in the last couple years a preparation where I didn’t have any kind of physical issues or health issues coming into the tournament. “There’s always something. ROME: The records keep coming for Jannik Sinner. The top-ranked Sinner beat qualifier Andrea Pellegrino 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Italian Open quarterfinals on Tuesday and match Novak Djokovic’s record with a 31st consecutive Masters Series victory. Sinner hasn’t been beaten in a Masters Series event — the biggest tournaments outside the Grand Slams — since he retired with cramps in extreme heat against Tallon Griekspoor in Shanghai in October. Djokovic won 31 straight Masters matches in 2011. “If you want to be a great player you’ve got to play on all the surfaces and all the tournaments at your maximum,” Sinner said. “It’s the mind that makes the difference.” Like in his previous match, Sinner took control quickly with a break in the opening game before a packed Campo Centrale — where many fans were decked out in orange, which is Sinner’s theme color.
