PARIS: Daniil Medvedev returned to the top of the ATP rankings on Monday, ahead of Alexander Zverev, with Novak Djokovic slipping out of the top two for the first time in nearly four years. The 26-year-old Russian, who was surprisingly beaten by Tim van Rijthoven in the final at ‘s-Hertogenbosch on Sunday, briefly occupied the number one spot for two weeks at the end of February and the beginning of March. But with Djokovic losing in the quarter-finals at the French Open, where he was defending champion, the door opened for Medvedev to rise again to top spot.
Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini complained on Friday that he has been "screwed" by the decision to strip the tournament of its ranking points. In May, both the ATP and the WTA announced that no points would be awarded after the All England Club banned Russian and Belarusian players from playing at Wimbledon as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Men's world number one Novak Djokovic said last month it was a "lose-lose" situation for everyone and former US and Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka said she was ready to boycott Wimbledon.
Rafael Nadal's uncle and former coach Toni has admitted that he believes his nephew could win Wimbledon despite uncertainty over whether he will play the tournament. The Spaniard has won the first two Grand Slams of the season for the first time in his career but has since undergone a new radiofrequency treatment for his chronic foot injury and will only appear at the All England Club if it is successful.
Wimbledon’s organisers have announced that prize money for this year’s tournament will be a record £40.3 million. The winners of both the men’s and women’s singles tournaments will each be awarded £2m, which is less than the 2019 prize of £2.35m — the last time crowd sizes were unaffected by coronavirus restrictions.
Rafael Nadal’s doctor, Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, admits his star patient’s ability to defy injury “would be a miracle for any normal person”. Nadal has twice defied a chronic foot problem in 2022 to win the Australian Open and then the French Open, while he also suffered a stress fracture in his rib prior to Roland-Garros.
