Virender Sehwag's Savage Reaction To Pakistan Analyst's "India Javelin Hero Nehra" Post

Former India batter Virender Sehwag trolled a Pakistan political analyst Zaid Hamid after the latter confused javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra with cricketer Ashish Nehra in one of his Twitter posts. The post came after Pakistan's javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem won a gold medal for the country at the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games. Referring to this achievement, Hamid tweeted: "And what makes this victory even sweeter is the fact that this Pakistani athlete has destroyed Indian javelin throw hero Ashish Nehra. In the last competition, Ashish had defeated Arshad Nadeem. What a sweet revenge to come back."

Watch out athletics world - Here comes Team India

Team India of course has had a few shining lights, who gave the rest of the athletics world a run for its money in their respective disciplines, from time to time on the global stage. The legendary Milkha Singh charged into the 1960 Rome Olympics having won the gold medals in the 200m and 400m sprints at the Tokyo Asian Games that year. He almost won a 400m bronze in Rome, only to heartbreakingly finish fourth, coming in just 0.1 seconds behind the bronze medallist Malcolm Spence of South Africa. That day in Rome, Milkha Singh couldn't grab an Olympic medal, but he created a National Record which stood for almost 40 years. Anju Bobby George shone brightest when she won the bronze medal in the 2003 World Championships in Paris in the women's long jump event. More recently, Hima Das made headlines in 2018, when she won the 400m gold at the U-20 World Championships. And then of course the crowning glory - javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra's gold at the Tokyo Olympics last year. The biggest prize in world sport - an Olympic gold medal - won by an Indian. The first Indian to win a gold medal at the Olympics in athletics ever and only the second overall (if you count Norman Pritchard's two silvers in the 1900 Games, representing India).

National Javelin Day recap: A reminder of how Neeraj Chopra has inspired countless young athletes

On August 7 this year, on the first anniversary of Neeraj's historic gold medal finish at the Japan National Stadium when he sealed the deal with a majestic throw of 87.58m, the first National Javelin Day was celebrated in the country. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) had earlier announced that from now on August 7 will be commemorated as National Javelin Day. According to AFI President Adille J Sumariwalla, this step has been taken to promote the sport at the grassroots level to encourage more and more kids to take up javelin, with Neeraj as their shining idol. As many as 32 State and Union Territory units affiliated to the AFI organised Javelin competitions on August 7. The competitions were held in various categories like, U-14, U-16, U-18, U-20 and Men's. The U-14 category of the Delhi State competition was won by 13-year-old Taksh Lohiya.

CWG 2022: Neeraj Chopra's heroics inspired young athletes' medal rush

Young Indian athletes to the fore at CWGBENGALURU: A series of superb performances by the Indian jumpers, led by triple jumpers Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker and middle distance runner Avinash Sable, powered India to the 12th spot in the athletics medals table, sixth by total, and made sure that the absence of Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra was not a big talking point. As an India team coach put it on the eve of the Games, Chopra's triumph in Tokyo galvanised a few Indian athletes and also broke the mental barrier of the legendary one hundredth of a second agony suffered by Milkha Singh and PT Usha. Instead, these athletes found that extra ounce of energy to peak at the right time and to produce their personal bests.
