But they collapsed to 234 all out, losing seven wickets for 70 runs inside 24 overs before lunch on the fifth day. Scott Boland sparked the slump with two wickets in an over, including the prize scalp of Virat Kohli, before off-spinner Nathan Lyon polished off the tail. Victory meant Australia had now captured the one major men's cricket title that had previously eluded them.

Gill lost his wicket after Cameron Green took a diving catch which turned out to be quite controversial as the ball appeared to have touched the ground. Due to inconclusive evidence the matter went straight to the third umpire and after inspection, he decided to dismiss Gill who was visibly upset.

Kohli and first innings hero Ajinkya Rahane (20 batting) added 71 runs for the fourth wicket as India need to score 280 runs in 90 overs on the final day. After bundling out Australia at 469, the Indian top-order had a tough time facing the bowling attack led by Pat Cummins. Only Ravindra Jadeja provided India with some momentum as he scored 48 off 51 balls but got dismissed by Nathan Lyon. Ajinkya Rahane hit a brilliant 89 to salvage some pride for India.

Starting the day on a positive note with the bowlers making a remarkable comeback and bundling out Australia for 469, the Rohit Sharma-led side was reduced to 151/5 at stumps. Only Jadeja played a knock of 48 off 51 balls and helped India gain some momentum. He was dismissed by Nathan Lyon and the Indian fans were visibly disappointed.
KS Bharat was dismissed on the second ball of Day 3 of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final as Scott Boland claimed another wicket at The Oval on Friday. It was a length delivery from Boland which seamed back in and went right through Bharat's defenses to crash into the stumps. The ball did hit the stumps on the way but it did not change anything as Bharat was dismissed for 5 off 15 deliveries. It was the second wicket of the encounter for Boland who enjoyed healthy movement off the pitch.
