BEIJING: COVID-19 cases at the Beijing Olympics have sidelined some figure skaters but also rattled healthy competitors who have suddenly found themselves without a coach at the most important competition of their careers.
Nathan Chen has explained some of the core traits needed to become an Olympic figure skater, stressing the “inherently athletic” nature of the sport. A three-time world champion and bronze medallist in the team event at Pyeongchang 2018, the Team USA star is going for gold in the men’s singles this time around and is among the favourites to top the podium. BEST MOMENTS OF THE DAY Lift off! Ad/> The XXIV Olympic Winter Games are officially… open! Beijing 2022Team GB underdogs 'have to try that little bit more' — Morgan2 HOURS AGO Beijing 2022 launched with a spectacular new-age ceremony, which harnessed an 11,600 square metre LCD screen to bring the Bird’s Nest stadium to life. Fireworks, mesmerising green rods and an unavoidably cute choir, what’s not to like? Flag bearers Eve Muirhead and Dave Ryding, curling and slalom hopefuls respectively, diligently led Team GB into the arena, while China’s arrival delighted the fans allowed into the arena amid Covid restrictions. The Olympic cauldron (aka just a small flame) was intended to convey China’s commitment to tackling climate change – and all in all it was a terrific spectacle.
Figure skating star Yuzuru Hanyu has promised to deliver the first ever clean quadruple axel in competition when he defends his Winter Olympic title in Beijing. The 27-year-old, considered by many to be the greatest skater of all time, is yet to be seen at the Games venue, prompting social media posts asking “HAVE YOU SEEN HIM?” from his adoring fans, nicknamed ‘Fanyus’.

Nathan Chen got his Winter Olympics off to a perfect start in Beijing, winning the team event men’s short programme to put the US on top of the standings at the end of day one. The triple world champion scored 111.71 points to easily take victory and was only 0.11 points short of the world record set by his rival, Yuzuru Hanyu — who is yet to compete at the Games.
Nathan Chen has nothing but respect for Yuzuru Hanyu — but at the Winter Olympics, he will be looking to deliver a blow to the Japanese figure skating legend and his passionate fan base. On paper, and for the uninitiated, the American should be the favourite for the title, having won the world title in the blue riband singles event on the past three occasions. But Hanyu is the reigning and double Olympic champion and for most, he is the GOAT — the greatest of all time — and many argue there has never been a talent like him.
