With 84 para-athletes participating this time in the mega event, Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) president Devendra Jhajharia is confident that India will surpass the last edition's medal tally. With three Paralympic medals and many accolades in the World Para Athletics Championships under his belt, Jhajharia brings a wealth of experience and inspiration to the role. Indian shooter Manu Bhaker scripted history by becoming the first athlete from independent India to win two individual medals in the same edition of the Olympics. Bhaker enjoyed a sensational run of form at the Paris Olympics 2024 as she won bronze in the women's 10m air pistol event and the 10m air pistol mixed team event along with Sarabjot Singh. Manu came extremely close to adding another medal to her tally but finished fourth in the 25m women's pistol. She has been enjoying a lot of attention since coming back home from the Olympics and in a video going viral on social media, she was seen grooving to the famous song "Kala Chashma" along with some school kids during a felicitation ceremony.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday interacted with the Indian contingent for the upcoming Paris Paralympics starting from August 28. Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya was also present during the interaction which was conducted on a video call. India is set to field its largest-ever contingent for the Paralympics, with 84 athletes competing in 12 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and taekwondo.
