MELBOURNE :Australia captain Pat Cummins and fellow paceman Josh Hazlewood will sit out another Ashes test with injury while opening batter Usman Khawaja, who suffered back spasms in Perth, has been retained in an unchanged squad for the second match in Brisbane.
Australia have suffered another blow ahead of the Ashes opener against England after fast bowler Josh Hazlewood was ruled out due to a hamstring injury on Saturday, further weakening their bowling attack after the loss of captain Pat Cummins.
Australia Test opener Usman Khawaja has opted out of Queensland's upcoming Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, where a win would seal their spot in the final. Khawaja was not named in Queensland's 14-man squad after the opener had flagged that he only wanted to play one of the two Shield matches that followed his return from Sri Lanka. Queensland have announced the squad for this week's must-win Sheffield Shield match against South Australia in Adelaide, with skipper Marnus Labuschagne returning to the line-up, following Australia's Champions Trophy campaign, to replace Khawaja.
Pacer Michael Neser has been ruled out of the remainder of Australia A match against India A with hamstring injury after bagging four wickets on the opening day of the second unofficial Test. Neser, who returned with the figures of 4-27, pulled up sharply following his second delivery of the 13th over in the morning. He immediately began limping off the ground in a clear sign that he knew exactly what the issue was. A Cricket Australia (CA) spokesperson confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Neser had injured his left hamstring and would not bowl again in the game. He will undergo scans to determine the severity of the injury.
MELBOURNE : India continued to fret over the composition of their opening pair for the series opener against Australia later this month after KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran failed to impress in the second unofficial test on Thursday.
Dhruv Jurel showcased his sound technique and cool temperament while wickets fell like ninepins at the other end in another shoddy batting display by India A on the opening day of the second unofficial Test against Australia A at the iconic MCG on Thursday. Jurel (80 off 186 balls), who came to bat in the third over scored nearly half of India A's paltry first innings total of 161 in 57.1 overs with only other batter to cross 20-run mark was Devdutt Padikkal (26).
Drafted to India A's squad ahead of the unofficial 2nd Test against Australia A, star batter KL Rahul could only manage to score 4 runs in the first inning at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Rahul, who opened the batting for India A in the second official Test, lasted just four balls, hitting a solitary boundary before being removed by pacer Scott Boland, who is part of Australia's squad for the upcoming five-match series against India, starting November 22. Apart from Rahul, Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwarana, also part of India's Test squad, registered a three-ball duck.
MELBOURNE : All-rounder Marcus Stoinis and spin bowler Ashton Agar have been dropped from Australia's contracts list for the 2024/25 season after falling out of favour with selectors.
