The world of Formula 1 could be bracing for a scandal involving the dominant Red Bull team.
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc powered their Ferraris to a one-two in second practice Friday for the Singapore Grand Prix, while runaway championship leader Max Verstappen and Red Bull struggled on Formula One's return to Asia. The Dutchman celebrated his 25th birthday Friday with a cake in the Red Bull team hospitality before the first session, then spent most of the second in the garage with mechanics working on his front suspension set-up. Verstappen, who can retain his Formula One world championship with a race win on Sunday if other results go his way, did emerge late in the hour-long session for one qualifying simulation lap.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has demanded Formula One’s governing body the FIA take robust action over reports Red Bull broke the rules when Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton to last year’s world championship.
Ferrari one-two at the end of Friday's Formula One practice for the Singapore Grand Prix. The 28-year-old lapped the 5km Marina Bay track in one minute, 42.587 seconds to end the day 0.208 seconds quicker than Leclerc. George Russell continued to show promise for Mercedes, after team mate Lewis Hamilton went quickest in Friday's opening session, with the third-fastest time, 0.324 seconds adrift.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was not worried by Ferrari’s impressive pace in FP2 at the Singapore Grand Prix. The 25-year-old Dutchman has the chance to win his second successive world championship if things go his way this weekend, but Carlos Sainz was quickest in the second session on Friday, with teammate Charles Leclerc second fastest.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has demanded Formula One's governing body the FIA take robust action over reports Red Bull broke the rules when Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton to last year's world championship. On the eve of the Singapore Grand Prix - a race which could see Verstappen secure his second title in as many seasons - his controversial maiden triumph is under the microscope amid allegations his Red Bull team overspent. F1 introduced a budget cap of 145 million (€148m) last year.
Lewis Hamilton went quickest Friday in first practice for the Singapore Grand Prix, edging out Max Verstappen who is on the verge of retaining his world championship. The British driver initially complained about his Mercedes having no "driveability" over team radio before scorching round the Marina Bay Circuit in 1min 43.033sec, 0.084sec ahead of Red Bull's Verstappen. It was the first time Hamilton had topped the timesheets in any session this year, giving him hope of being able to score a first victory and maintain his run of winning a race in every season since his 2007 debut.
