The CUPRA EKS team dominated its home round of the 2022 FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup, winning both the Pool FAST and Pool FURIOUS DHL Super Finals at the Circuito de Madrid Jarama-RACE to extend its lead at the top of the manufacturers’ points table. Mattias Ekström recorded his second perfect score of the season by mastering Pool FURIOUS.
CUPRA EKS driver Mattias Ekström proved fastest in the Pool FURIOUS quaifying sessions at the Circuito de Madrid Jarama-RACE with the Swede setting a time in Q1 which was unbeaten by any of the Q2 runs, with Ekström himself opting to save his tyres in the searing heat. Ekström set a 1m 37.264s lap which was over a tenth slower than his CUPRA EKS team-mate Jordi Gené, running in the FAST pool.

For the third round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup the team at the top of the Manufactirers’ standings, CUPRA EKS, heads to their manufacturing and racing home of Spain and Madrid’s Jarama-RACE circuit hopeful of continuing their 2022 success so far. After finishing the first round with three of the CUPRA EKS team drivers on the podium in Pau for Infinite Reality Race FR, the squad emerged from last weekend’s Race HU at Budapest with Adrien Tambay as King of the Weekend and overall points leader and Mattias Ekström second in the weekend and season. Ad/> With a healthy 90-point lead in the Manufacturers’ standings, CUPRA hope home advantage pays dividends.
After a competitive weekend at the Hungaroring for the second round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup Hyundai Motorsport was able to reflect on its strongest showing in the 2022 season and as vast improvement at a circuit where it struggled with speed in the inaugural PURE ETCR season less than 12 months ago. After setting competitive times in Qualifying, both Mikel Azcona and Kevin Ceccon secured positions in Pool FAST’s Quarter Final 1. Azcona was able to successfully overtake the CUPRA of Mattias Ekström, but lost the victory in the final two corners of the Quarter Final after a small mistake.
Strategy was at the heart of both Pool FAST Semi Finals in Budapest, with Hyundai Motorsport N’s Mikel Azcona and Romeo Ferraris’ Giovanni Venturini taking the wins in their respective races. SF1 saw a great start from CUPRA EKS’ Mattias Ekström, only to be out-powered up by Azcona into Turn 1 for the lead.
The first Quarter Finals for FIA ETCR RACE HU took place this afternoon, with CUPRA EKS driver Mattias Ekström taking the chequered flag first in Quarter Final 1 and Maxime Martin claiming the same in Quarter Final 2 for Romeo Ferraris. Ekström started the race on Pole but lost the lead early on to former team-mate Mikel Azcona who remained at the front for the majority of the 3-lap race, while Hyundai Motorsport N’s Kevin Ceccon was left with third place after running wide at the first corner.
Adrien Tambay, driving for CUPRA EKS, was fastest in both Pool FURIOUS Qualifying sessions this afternoon, setting a best overall lap in 1:54.687. Tambay, sharing his car with this morning’s fastest driver Mattias Ekström, played it safe in Qualifying 1, though still taking the top spot, before improving in the second session to set the top time for Pool FURIOUS.
