Hossein Vafaei is «not going to buckle» against Ronnie O'Sullivan in their second-round World Championship grudge match, reckons Mark Selby. Selby, who won through to the second round himself by beating Matt Selt on Thursday, is — like many — eagerly anticipating the clash between the warring pair that begins at 2.30pm on discovery+ and Eurosport. Ad On the eve of the encounter, O'Sullivan — responding to Vafaei's comments that he wants to «shut» The Rocket's mouth — said that some of the Iranian's comments «didn't make sense», and added that he doesn't «get involved in those battles because it is not worth it.» World ChampionshipHearn 'fell off chair laughing' after Vafaei’s dig at O’Sullivan3 HOURS AGO And now Selby, a four-time champion at the Crucible and a man who knows both players well, gave his take on the saga and the upcoming match.
While many eyes were drawn to the tussle between Mark Selby and Matthew Selt on the adjoining table, Luca Brecel and Mark Williams were sprinkling stardust in the second round of the World Snooker Championship. The pair shared the opening eight-frame session of their clash at the Crucible, with both serving up high-calibre snooker. Ad With Williams 3-1 to the good, Brecel found himself under a bit of pressure.
Mark Selby benefited from a “bonkers” fluke on his way to victory over Matthew Selt in the first round of the World Championship. Looking to wrap up the match at 9-7 ahead, Selby took aim at the blue into the middle pocket… but he miscued loudly and the blue went flying around the table and rolled into the top pocket. Not only that, but Selby ended up well positioned on the only red left on the table.
Matthew Selt declared a fantastic safety escape by Mark Selby as the best shot of the 2023 World Championship. Trailing 8-6 in the first-round match, Selt looked to have put Selby in a very difficult position as he played tightly up behind the brown after potting a long red. Ad With red balls clustered around the other end of the table it looked a challenge for Selby to get out without leaving a pot on.
Mark Selby held off a spirited fightback from Matthew Selt to reach the second round of the World Championship. The four-time champion led 6-3 overnight after a strong start where he produced breaks of 94, 83, 110 and 131. Ad He wasn’t cueing as impressively in a scrappy and tight deciding session but produced a fine 112 break to finally end Selt's hopes and win 10-8.
