Ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime won a four-set battle with veteran Marin Cilic in searing heat to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Monday.
MELBOURNE: Former US Open champion Marin Cilic said his 7-5 7-6(3) 3-6 6-3 win over Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open on Saturday (Jan 22) was the result of a gradual improvement in form over the past few months.
Andrey Rublev has insisted he didn’t break any rules when he travelled to Australia and never put anyone at risk of being infected with the coronavirus. Rublev previously caused a stir by telling a Russian sports website that he was still positive for Covid-19 when he flew in ahead of the Australian Open. By then, he had already spent 10 days in quarantine in Spain.
Former Australian Open finalist Garbiñe Muguruza crashed out of this year's tournament as she succumbed to a surprise second-round 6-3, 6-3 loss to France's Alize Cornet.
