IPL auction, according to franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka and head coach Andy Flower. The KL Rahul-led Lucknow had a very good first day at the IPL auction, probably the best among all franchises, and followed it up on Sunday with the handy Rs 2 crore purchase of pacer Dushmantha Chameera and opener Evin Lewis. There were some other useful buys like spin-bowling allrounder K Gowtham. IPL AUCTION: AS IT HAPPENED"We are very happy. I'm glad we seem to have a well-considered, versatile squad. We wanted to have a lot of multi-skilled, multi-dimensional players and some backup options and we could pull it off," RPSG Group chairman and franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka told TOI. "Even though we had all plans in place, there was a lot of thinking on our feet involved. We got a great opener in Quinton (de Kock). We have a very good allrounder in Jason Holder. In Rahul and Manish Pandey we have two solid Indian batsmen."
The bowling attack which wore an ominous look with Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, R Ashwin, Axar Patel and Avesh Khan has been disturbed. Shardul Thakur, Mustafizur Rahman, Khaleel Ahmed, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Kuldeep Yadav and Lungi Ngidi will assume lead roles with their variations to complement Nortje and Axar. IPL AUCTION: AS IT HAPPENEDDavid Warner and Mitchell Marsh, the player of the T20 World Cup and player of the T20 World Cup final, are expected to make up for the lack of firepower due to the loss of Shikhar Dhawan, Shimron Hetmyer and Marcus Stoinis. But the real challenge will be to stabilize the middle-order which will help leverage their skipper Rishabh Pant to play the high-impact role. This is where the likes of KS Bharat, Mandeep Singh and Sarfaraz Khan are expected to play their roles. "One must remember Bharat played at No. 3 for RCB last year and did a very good job. He is expected to play a similar role here if needed. He is not seen just as a backup wicketkeeper to Pant," Saba Karim, DC's head of talent search, told TOI moments after the auction on Sunday evening.
Australia's Steve Smith made an incredible acrobatic attempt at preventing a six against Sri Lanka during the 2nd T20I between the two sides in Sydney on Sunday. Australia went on to clinch victory via super over in a dramatic encounter. Smith could manage just 14 runs during Australia's innings but caught the attention of fans after putting his body on the line in his attempt to save the six. Smith's attempt, however, was unsuccessful as replays showed his foot touching the rope before he caught the ball and sent it back to the field.
Australia batter Steven Smith was on Sunday ruled out of the remainder of the T20I series against Sri Lanka after suffering a concussion while fielding during his side's win in Super Over in the second match at the SCG here. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed after the match that Smith had suffered a concussion after landing on his head following a spectacular diving attempt to save a six in the final over of the second innings, according to 'ESPNcricino'. He will be subject to low-level concussion protocols over the next few days.
