Mainz’s physical approach looked like it would pay off and that they would extend their unbeaten home record to nine matches, but Witsel’s finish proved the difference, keeping Dortmund in the title race.

BERLIN: Axel Witsel scored late to give Borussia Dortmund a bad-tempered 1-0 win at Mainz on Wednesday in their postponed Bundesliga game to cut the gap to leader Bayern Munich to four points. American forward Gio Reyna, who came on in the 69th minute as a substitute, set up the winner by floating a free kick to the far post for Witsel to score in the 87th. But the game itself had few highlights as it was punctuated by many fouls, niggles and disagreements.

Mats Hummels has been passed fit after recovering from Covid and could return for Borussia Dortmund in their re-arranged Bundesliga game at mid-table Mainz on Wednesday. An away win for second-placed Dortmund would see the visitors trim the lead of Bayern Munich in Germany's top flight to four points. Dortmund coach Marco Rose hopes his chief defender Hummels will feature. "He has cleared and passed all the medical tests. We will see if he can play," Rose said of Hummels Tuesday.
