For the first time in his debut Vuelta, things did not go entirely according to plan for Remco Evenepoel after the race leader became the second Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl rider in as many days to hit the deck on a slippery corner. Luckily for the red jersey, the damage was not as severe as it was for his team-mate Julian Alaphilippe 24 hours earlier, the French world champion having been forced out of the race with a dislocated shoulder.
Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) went the wrong way in an embarrassing moment on the Stage 10 individual time trial at La Vuelta. Almeida was charging towards the finish in Alicante when he suddenly dived down an escape road to his left reserved for the team vehicles. Samuele Battistella (Astana Qazaqstan) exploded with fury at his fellow escapee Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin–Deceuninck) as his rival refused to cooperate on Stage 9 at La Vuelta. The Italian screamed «what the f*** are you doing» as Janssens sat on his back wheel with 7km remaining of the final climb to Les Praeres, rather than help maintain their advantage at the front of the race. Ad The pair only had a 20-second lead over a seven-strong chase group, which contained Janssens’ team-mate Robert Stannard, as Battistella lost his cool.
Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) and Robert Stannard (Alpecin–Deceuninck) had a furious row during the early running of Stage 9 at La Vuelta. Soler appeared to be aggrieved at the lack of cooperation as the day’s breakaway tried to form with 131km remaining on the run from Villaviciosa to Les Praeres – although he may have simply been angered by Stannard moving across his path. Ad Either way, the Spaniard was pictured gesticulating wildly at Stannard, pointing in frustration as his rival fired back in defence.
