An Indian cricket team broke a 129-year-old first-class record as nine batters hit half-centuries in the domestic Ranji Trophy.
Ranji Trophy team on Thursday created a global first-class record when all nine batters, who took guard, scored half-centuries in a mammoth first innings score of 773 for eight against a hapless Jharkhand on the third day of the quarter-final, here. At stumps, Jharkhand were 139 for 5 in their first innings and it is virtually impossible to stop Bengal from entering the semi-final as the opposition now trails by 634 runs. The match will be remembered for a record that stood the test of time since 1893 when the touring Australian team, in a first-class game against combined universities (Oxford and Cambridge), had eight of their batters scoring fifty or more.
With nine of their batters scoring half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Jharkhand in Bengaluru, the Bengal cricket team set a new world record in First-Class cricket. Bengal declared on 773/7 on the third day of the knock-out stage game after all their batters, who got time in the middle, hit at least a half-century each. No. 3 batter Sudip Gharami and No. 4 Anustup Majumdar even reached the triple figures. This is the first time in the history of cricket that nine batters have scored a half-century each in a First-class innings.
Sudip Gharami hogged the limelight for the second day running with a 186-run knock as Bengal reached 577 for five in their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Jharkhand on Tuesday. The seasoned Anustup Majumdar helped himself to a century (117) before Manoj Tiwary, a sitting minister for youth affairs and sports in West Bengal, walked back unbeaten on 54 at the end of second day's play at the Just Cricket Academy Ground.
Three months after refusing to play for Bengal after his India career ended, veteran stumper Wriddhiman Saha has agreed to play for Bengal in the all-important Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Jharkhand in Bengaluru from June 6. The CAB also named speedster Mohammed Shami in the squad although his participation will depend on clearance from the BCCI and head coach Rahul Dravid taking his workload management into account. However, it was 37-year-old Saha, whose comeback headlined the Bengal squad after he had refused to play red ball cricket citing "personal reasons".

Hardik Pandya has been in good batting form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season and finds himself in contention for the prestigious Orange Cap. The all-rounder smashed an unbeaten knock of 87 runs off 52 balls (including eight fours and four sixes) to help Gujarat Titans (GT) defeat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 37 runs at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, on Thursday. The former Mumbai Indians (MI) player received plenty of praise on social media for his performance and in particular from senior India cricketer Manoj Tiwary. The former KKR man backed Pandya for Team India's captaincy and revealed that he was impressed with his leadership skills.
Shahbaz Ahmed and debutant wicketkeeper Abhishek Porel struck unbeaten fifties as Bengal bounced back after their first-innings debacle to secure a dramatic four-wicket win over Baroda in their Ranji Trophy Group B opener on Sunday. Chasing 349 on the fourth day after being shot out for a paltry 88 in the first innings, Bengal rode on the duo of Ahmed and Porel, who stitched an unbroken 108-run partnership for the seventh wicket to steer their team home. Resuming on 146/2, Bengal received an early jolt when skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran got out without any addition to his overnight total of 79 in the fourth ball of the day.
