Ben Stokes Will Be A "Brilliant" Test Captain For England, Says Mahela Jayawardena

Former Sri Lanka great Mahela Jayawardena believes star all-rounder Ben Stokes will be a "brilliant" Test captain for England if he improves his performances in red-ball cricket. Stokes was announced as England's new Test skipper with the upcoming home series' against New Zealand and India in June. "I think he (Stokes) will be a brilliant captain. He has been around for a while and shown again and again that he is a brilliant competitor and he is a different beast altogether when he is on the field. England haven't seen an all-rounder captaining their Test team for a long time and I think he is the ideal candidate. Having his type of character (as captain) might create a culture which they have had with white-ball cricket recently, but now need to find that same kind of culture with red-ball cricket," Mahela Jayawardena said on The ICC Review.

Ishan Kishan was the cynosure of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 auction when Mumbai Indians (MI) splashed INR 15.25 crore to pick the left-handed opener. It made him one of the costliest players ever in the history of the T20 franchise cricket league. However, eight matches into the ongoing season, Kishan has failed to live up to the hype. He has tallied just 199 at an average of 28.43 and a strike-rate of 108.15. After scoring half-centuries in the first two matches of the IPL 2022, Kishan has failed to go past 26 in the next six matches.

"Not What We Are Looking From Him": Mahela Jayawardene On Mumbai Indians Star After Loss To Lucknow Super Giants

Left-handed batter Ishan Kishan was picked up by Mumbai Indians in the IPL mega auction for a whopping Rs 15.25 crore and the franchise was expecting him to be at his best and help the Rohit Sharma-led side get off to good starts. However, after scoring 81 in the first game this season, Kishan has failed to get going and he is currently going through a slump in form. In eight matches so far, he has managed 199 runs with an average of 28.43. IPL 2022: Mahela Jayawardene backs struggling Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has backed out-of-form openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, saying a turn around is certainly possible and he would be concerned only if the duo was not hitting the ball well. Rohit Sharma hasn't been his usual self, the destructive batter that used to pummel the opposition attacks to submission. Rohit, who could not open his account against CSK on Thursday night, has managed only 114 runs from seven innings this season.
