It’s hard to see how Primoz Roglic could have played his cards better at the end of an otherwise dull and dreary Stage 16 of La Vuelta – save for not undoing all his hard work by inexplicably crashing inside the final 100 metres. “We had planned to attack in the final phase of this stage,” Jumbo-Visma DS Addy Engels later said.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) went down in an inexplicable crash just 150 metres from the finish to dampen his own devastating attack on Stage 16 at La Vuelta. The Slovenian blew the peloton apart when he launched inside the final 3km as the race headed uphill, leading a select of group of five riders into the home straight as he sought to gain time on Remco Evenpoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl).
Mads Pedersen showed supreme power as he sprinted to win stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana, a 168.4km flat ride from Ronda to Montilla on Friday. The Trek-Segafredo rider edged out Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) after chasing a long sprint from Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates), who came third. The points classification leader made the most of the uphill finish in Montilla as he crossed the line with his arms in the air, celebrating his first stage win on the Vuelta. "We knew that the final was super good so the boys did good today and everyone was focussed the whole day," Pedersen, the 2019 world champion, said. "I'm happy that I could finally get the win and give the boys back for all the work they did so far. It's really nice for all of us." Race leader Remco Evenepoel of QuickStep-AlphaVinyl, who suffered a crash on Thursday, came through the stage safely and retained his red jersey.

There’s something about Stage 13 on Fridays in Grand Tours that makes Mads Pedersen click. Just as he did on the Tour de France this July, the Dane blasted clear to take a maiden triumph on La Vuelta with a perfect finish from the Trek-Segafredo star.
