TORONTO: Scott Dixon had been waiting more than a year to join Mario Andretti in second place on IndyCar’s career wins list.
TORONTO (AP) — Scott Dixon snapped a 22-race winless streak Sunday and moved into a tie with Mario Andretti for second on IndyCar's career wins list when he held off pole-sitter Colton Herta and Felix Rosenqvist in the series' return to Canada.
In the pole position shootout between those in the fast six, Alexander Rossi set the early marker to beat of 59.6090s, until Newgarden scorched around in 59.5257s despite grazing the wall.
McLaughlin took advantage of a full course caution caused by Kyle Kirkwood to leap from second to lead 45 of the 80 laps.
Team Penske's Newgarden delivered a 1m15.215s lap, an average of 112.477s, to go fastest by 0.133s and claim his 16th pole.
No cars had set a flying lap by the time the first incident occurred, as FP1 pacesetter Kyle Kirkwood was struggling with the brakes on his AJ Foyt car.
It was confirmed on Wednesday that Rossi will leave Andretti Autosport after scoring seven wins, including the 2016 Indianapolis 500, in his seven seasons with the team.
The official entry list for the 106th Indy 500 was released Monday with 33 teams filling the field for the May 29 race (11 a.m. ET, NBC) at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
