Kevin Magnussen described the ‘crazy’ events that led to him replacing Nikita Mazepin at Haas. Haas employed Mazepin as part of the deal that saw his father Dmitry sponsor the US team through his Urakali company.
In the wake of Haas terminating the contract it had with Nikita Mazepin, the American-owned outfit made it a priority to sound out Magnussen about whether or not he would be up for a return to grand prix racing as the Russian’s replacement.

The Haas team was able to send out a car for the second session of Bahrain testing Day 1, after missing the first. Haas had freight problems which meant that they were awaiting a delivery to be able to get their car out on the track on Friday, and they did not receive the goods in time for the first run, meaning just nine drivers were out in force in the morning.

Formula One cancels Russian Grand Prix following invasion of Ukraine
Kevin Magnussen on Wednesday returned to the Haas Formula One team to replace Russian driver Nikita Mazepin who was sacked following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Haas said 29-year-old Magnussen had signed a "multi-year contract agreement" and the Dane will drive in the official pre-season test at Bahrain from Thursday to Saturday. "I'm delighted to welcome Kevin Magnussen back to Haas F1 Team," said Guenther Steiner, the Haas team boss.
