Teenaged qualifier Linda Noskova saved a match point before completing a stunning 6-4 6-7(3) 7-6(6) victory over double Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Adelaide International 1.
Canada's Leylah Fernandez fell 4-6, 2-6 to Belgium's Ysaline Bonaventure in the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic tennis tournament Thursday in Auckland, New Zealand.
Home favourite and world No. 2 Ons Jabeur eased into the quarter-finals of the Jasmin Open in Tunisia with victory over Evgeniya Rodina. Jabeur, who was born 10 miles away from where the tournament is being held in Monastir, needed less than an hour to win 6-1 6-3.
Iga Swiatek returned to the court for the first time since her US Open triumph last month, and advanced to the Agel Open quarter-finals with a 7-5 2-2 walkover victory against qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic. Swiatek and the Australian were engrossed in a tight battle throughout the first set which the three-time grand slam winner eventually took, despite a determined Tomljanovic clawing back a commanding 4-1 Swiatek lead. Ad It was a fierce start to the second set from both players in which all four games went to deuce, but Tomljanovic began to noticeably struggle with a knee injury during the second game, and eventually called it quits.
The world number one was leading 7-5, 2-2 in a tight encounter when the Australian quit, shortly after clutching her knee in pain. "It was a great match and it's unfortunate that something happened -- I hope she's going to recover quickly," said Swiatek.
