Liverpool are League Cup winners 2022!
Diogo Jota is fit enough to be named among the Liverpool substitutes for this afternoon’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.
Jurgen Klopp branded Caoimhin Kelleher the world’s best back-up goalkeeper after the Republic of Ireland star’s penalty shoot-out heroics sealed Liverpool’s Carabao Cup triumph over Chelsea.
When Chelsea sent penalties specialist Kepa Arrizabalaga into the dying embers of extra-time at Wembley, the Blues most certainly did not expect the Spaniard to end up shooting at goal.
Kepa Arrizabalaga, having been subbed on for Edouard Mendy late on in extra time, ballooned his effort from 12 yards over the bar and into the Liverpool supporters to give Jurgen Klopp's side their ninth League Cup trophy.
Liverpool won the League Cup final in dramatic fashion as Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga missed the decisive penalty to give the Reds an 11-10 shoot-out victory after a pulsating 0-0 draw at Wembley on Sunday. Jurgen Klopp's side clinched their first domestic knockout prize since the 2012 League Cup when Kepa blazed his spot-kick high over the bar. It was the only miss in the nerve-jangling shoot-out, which saw Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher score his penalty just before Kepa failed. AS IT HAPPENEDIronically, Kepa was sent on at the end of extra-time to replace Edouard Mendy given his reputation as a penalty saving specialist, but the Spaniard was unable to repel any of Liverpool's kicks. While there were no goals in 120 minutes, this was a fascinating final which produced countless chances for both sides to win it before the cruel denouement. Liverpool saw Joel Matip's second-half goal controversially disallowed for a marginal offside against Virgil van Dijk, while Chelsea had three goals ruled out for offside later in the match.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has said there must be room for sentiment in football, after his decision to keep faith with Caoimhin Kelleher for the Carabao Cup final was rewarded with victory over Chelsea. The Reds secured the trophy in a spectacular penalty shootout. Kelleher did not make a save in the 11-10 win, as victory was secured when his opposite number Kepa Arrizabalaga — who was thrown by Chelsea for penalties — sent his effort high over the bar, moments after the Irish stopper had lashed home his effort.
