Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) cracked Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and a host of GC favourites to grab the red jersey at La Vuelta in a wet and wild finale to Stage 6. After being teed up by team-mate Julian Alaphilippe, Evenepoel hit the front of a fast-evaporating peloton with 8km remaining – quickly forming a four-strong select group with Roglic, Enric Mas (Movistar) and Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers). Zwift sensation Jay Vine (Alpecin-Deceuninck) claimed his first pro victory on Stage 6 at La Vuelta as Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) grabbed the leader's red jersey in the pouring rain. Three-time champion Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) could not live with the pace set by Evenepoel, crossing the line with a larger group 80 seconds later. Such were the appalling conditions that TV images failed to capture Vine crossing the line – instead broadcasting a gloomy haze – before Evenepoel led home Enric Mas (Movistar).
On the first uphill finish of La Vuelta 2022 it was business as usual for Primoz Roglic, the three-time defending champion, who won at a canter over Denmark’s Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Spain’s Enric Mas (Movistar) to take over the red jersey in style from his Jumbo-Visma team-mate Edoardo Affini. The 10th Vuelta stage victory in Roglic’s career ended any lingering doubts about the 32-year-old Slovenian’s form and fitness following the crash that saw him pulled from July’s Tour de France after the second week.
The first proper lumps and bumps await the riders as the peloton race on Spanish roads for the first time in this year’s La Vuelta. A punchy stage that should suit the sprinters, who can also climb, or the puncheurs will be targeting victory in Laguardia. Ad Sam Bennett (Bora Hansgrohe) has the chance to make it a hat-trick of stage wins following his impressive victories at the weekend, but is unlikely to be part of the fight at the end of Tuesday's stage which features a steep kick with 500m to go.
