Julian Alaphilippe will return to competition at the French Championships road race on Sunday, two months after a crash left him with a collapsed lung, broken ribs and a broken shoulder blade, his Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team said.
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team manager Patrick Lefevere said that Mark Cavendish will likely miss out on selection for the Tour de France, with Fabio Jakobsen the preferred sprinter. The Manxman will only be considered should Jakobsen have any issues, and a final call will be made following the conclusion of the Tour de Suisse on June 21, as the eight riders will be confirmed. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl have confirmed that Julian Alaphilippe will be able to resume indoor training, but a date for his return to racing has yet to be confirmed. Alaphilippe is continuing his rehabilitation after being involved in a huge crash at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, with at least a dozen other riders. Riders were fortunate to escape serious injury after a motorbike crashed into the peloton on Stage 4 at the Giro d’Italia. As the main group navigated a twisting road with 160km remaining on the first Sicilian stage, the bike was upended by a small piece of road furniture – sending it careering into the back of the main group. Ad/> Roger Kluge (Lotto Soudal) and Filippo Fiorelli (Bardiani–CSF–Faizane) were among the riders to hit the deck but, fortunately, all appeared to emerge largely unscathed.
