Mark Williams is set to join fellow snooker professionals Judd Trump, Mark Selby and Mark Allen by deploying his green baize skills on the pool table. The Welshman – world champion in 2000, 2003 and 2018 – intends to combine his commitments to the World Snooker Tour circuit by appearing as regular on the Ultimate Pool tour. Ad Williams is set to make his debut alongside former 8-ball world champion Carl Morris in the Pairs Cup on Monday 10 October.

The snooker season will soon be fully awake after a few months in which it’s opened its eyes only to close them again. The British Open, which gets underway later this month, is only the third event since the new campaign began in June.

Ronnie O'Sullivan will face local icon and three-time women's world champion Ng On Yee in his opening match at the invitational Hong Kong Masters at 7pm (12pm BST) on Friday 7 October. The winner of that quarter-final at the Hong Kong Coliseum will meet Masters holder Neil Robertson or UK champion Zhao Xintong in the last four on Saturday 8 October at 7pm local time. Ad Four-time world champion Mark Selby meets former Scottish Open winner Marco Fu in the tournament opener on Thursday 6 October at 1.30pm (6.30am BST).

A number of snooker's most celebrated figures have been honoured by Queen Elizabeth II for their services to the sport during her historic 70-year reign, including Ronnie O'Sullivan, Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis, arguably the three greatest players of all time. 2019 world champion Judd Trump and four-time Crucible winner Mark Selby were both awarded MBEs in the Queen’s 2022 Birthday Honours List for services to the sport and their charity commitments off the table. Ad Buckingham Palace confirmed in a statement on Thursday, September 8 2022 that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96.

Snooker players to earn minimum £20,000 prize money in major cash boost for new season

All 130 professional snooker players on the World Snooker Tour will be guaranteed minimum earnings of £20,000 for the 2022/23 season in a major £2.6m cash boost. An initial payment of £10,000 will be doled out this month with another £10,000 paid to the tour member in January.

There have been 72 winners in 46 years of the professional era with England the most prolific country in world snooker, claiming 199 titles between 36 players, Scotland winning 80 between seven players and Wales picking up 40 between eight players. Ad Australia occupies fourth spot in the overall list with Neil Robertson astonishingly winning all of his country's 23 ranking titles between 2006 and 2022.

Mark Allen used the break in the snooker calendar to show off his cue sports skills at the Ultimate Pool Players Championship with some dazzling breaks. The Northern Ireland Open champion is not due to return to competitive action on the snooker table until the opening round of the British Open on Monday 26 September against Stuart Carrington in Milton Keynes. Ad Allen lost 2-0 to three-time champion Mick Hill in Sunday's final of Group 5, being edged out 9-8 and 9-3 by the 8-ball specialist in Newcastle-under-Lyme, but admits the experience has inspired him to try the smaller baize in future.
