ENG vs NZ, 1st Test, Day 1: Matthew Potts Stars On England Debut But New Zealand Fight Back With 7 Wickets

England debutant Matthew Potts took four wickets against New Zealand only for the hosts to collapse as well on the opening day of the first Test at Lord's on Thursday. The World Test champions were dismissed for 132 before England, in the first of this three-match series, slumped to 116-7 by stumps. Pre-match, there had been talk of England making a fresh start under new Test captain Ben Stokes and recently-appointed red-ball coach Brendon McCullum, the former New Zealand skipper.

Old faces James Anderson and Stuart Broad embrace new approach to run through New Zealand top-order

As they prepared to bowl their opening deliveries at the start of England’s home summer of 2022, both James Anderson and Stuart Broad received generous applause at Lord’s. Nothing new about that, of course, only this time felt a little different: the greeting seemed like an endorsement - and a repudiation, therefore, of England’s two highest wicket-takers being dropped from the tour of the West Indies in March.

Watch: Shane Warne Given Moving Tribute During England vs New Zealand Lord's Test

On March 4, 2022, world cricket lost a legend in Shane Warne. The former Australian leg-spinner died at the age of 52 due to natural causes on the Thai holiday island of Koh Samui. Warne remains the second highest wicket taker in the history of Test cricket, behind Muttiah Muralitharan, with 708 scalps to his name. Warne played 194 One Day Internationals for Australia in which he scalped 293 wickets. The right-hander was also handy with the bat as he scored 3,154 runs in his Test career. He amassed 1,018 runs in the 50-overs format. The leg-spinner took a total of 1001 international wickets and was the first-ever bowler to scale the peak of 1,000 international wickets.

Watch: Jonny Bairstow Takes Two Screamers As England Begin Ben Stokes Era In Style On Day 1 of England vs New Zealand 1st Test At Lord's

England were off to a solid start against New Zealand in Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum's first Test as captain and head coach, respectively. After the Kiwis elected to bat first at Lord's, James Anderson struck twice in as many overs to remove New Zealand openers Will Young and Tom Latham. However, it was Jonny Bairstow who played a big part in both the dismissals, taking two "outrageous" catches at third slip. Young was the first one to depart after Anderson lured him into playing a drive.
