Novak Djokovic's Australian Open Preparations Take Hit With Loss To Reilly Opelka

Former world number one Novak Djokovic's Australian Open preparations suffered a blow Friday as he was bundled out of the Brisbane International by towering American Reilly Opelka. The 2.11 metre (six feet 11 inches) Opelka served magnificently and returned just as well to stun the 24-time Grand Slam winner 7-6 (8/6), 6-3. Djokovic had gone into the tournament insisting that at 37 he still had the game to trouble the younger players. But Opelka, 27, a former world number 17 who was out of the game for almost two years from 2022-24 following hip and wrist surgeries, dominated the Serb and wrapped up a comfortable win in an hour and 40 minutes.

Lorenzo Musetti Stuns Top Seed Alexander Zverev With 'Pretty Big Win' In Vienna

Lorenzo Musetti stunned world number three Alexander Zverev to reach the semi-finals in Vienna on Friday, describing his comeback triumph as "a pretty big win". Italian 17th-ranked Musetti came through 2-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 after two hours, 36 minutes to see off the 2021 champion. "It didn't start how we planned, I was struggling to find the right balance with my forehand and the variation of my backhand," said the 22-year-old who was an Olympic bronze medallist in the summer, just weeks after reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Carlos Alcaraz Recovers From US Open Disappointment, Hands Spain Winning Start In Davis Cup

Carlos Alcaraz starred in singles and doubles as Spain made a winning start in the Davis Cup Finals Group Stage against an injury-blighted Czechia. Roberto Bautista Agut secured the first point for Spain in singles with a 6-2 6-3 win over Jiri Lehecka. It set Alcaraz up to secure the win, but Czechia's Tomas Machac gifted the home team the decisive second point when he was forced to retire in the third set. It was all the more disappointing for Machac that he picked up the injury after winning a first-set tiebreak against Alcaraz. The world No.3 was far from his best in the opening stages, spewing 21 unforced errors in the opening set, in his first Davis Cup appearance since 2022.
