Canadian speed skater Laurent Dubreuil is in position to claim the season title in the men's 500 metres on Sunday after a second-place finish at the ISU speed skating finals on Saturday in Heerenven, Netherlands.

Netherlands claimed women's team sprint gold while Norway claimed the men's title at the World Championships in Hamar. The Dutch squad of Jutta Leerdam, Femke Kok and Dione Voskamp claimed gold with a time of 1:27.42, with Poland taking silver and home nation Norway taking bronze.
Jutta Leerdam beat compatriot Femke Kok by just 0.15 seconds over 1000m to win gold in the women's event. Kok won both 500m races but couldn't keep the gap close enough to Leerdam at the longer distance, and despite finishing second in both 1000m races, it was not enough to take the title.
The Netherlands secured a pair of 1-2s in the men's and women's sprint events at the World Speed Skating Championships in Hamar, Norway. Jutta Leerdam beat compatriot Femke Kok by just 0.15 seconds over 1000m to win gold in the women's event.
Thomas Krol capped a fantastic day for the Netherlands as he set a new tournament record to win the first 1000m men's sprint at the ISU World Championships. The Dutch speed skater's time of 1:08.16 was enough to finish ahead of Norway's Haavard Lorentzen in second and Canada's Laurent Dubreuil in third. Ad/> Olympic gold-medallist Lorentzen finished in 1:08.82, while this year's silver-medallist in Beijing Dubreuil recorded a time of 1:08.85.

The international union that governs skating has banned athletes from Russia and Belarus from its competitions across figure skating and speed skating. The International Olympic Committee took the unprecedented step on Monday of calling sports organisations around the world to ban the two nations from competing to “protect the integrity of competitions for the safety of all the participants." Ad/> The International Skating Union (ISU) said in a statement: «With immediate effect and until further notice, no skaters belonging to the ISU Members in Russia (Russian Skating Union and the Figure Skating Federation of Russia) and Belarus (Skating Union of Belarus) shall be invited or allowed to participate in International ice skating competitions including ISU Championships and other ISU Events.
