Callum McGregor admits Switzerland and Hungary will "smell blood" after watching Scotland get thumped 5-1 by Germany in their Euro 2024 opener in Munich on Friday night.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann hailed Friday's 5-1 thumping of Scotland as an "important" first step as the hosts kicked off Euro 2024 in emphatic style.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said his side understood Friday's 5-1 thumping of Scotland in the Euro 2024 opener was just a "first step" for the tournament hosts. Germany, who have struggled at major tournaments for most of the past decade, blew the Scots off the park. "The team is conscious that this was a first step," said Nagelsmann as Germany eye a record-breaking fourth European title. "But it was very good and very important and was something that we can build on."
Scotland coach Steve Clarke said his team had to quickly forget Friday's 5-1 rout by Euro 2024 hosts Germany in the tournament opener after admitting the "game ran away from us". In 11 past major tournament Scotland have never advanced beyond the group stage and their chances of doing so this summer were jeopardised by a dismal display against Germany. "Obviously we didn't play to our standard," said Clarke. "We feel as though we've let ourselves down. We're a better team than this."
Germany thrashed 10-man Scotland 5-1 with three goals in the first half to make a triumphant start to their Euro 2024 campaign and lay down a marker with the biggest opening game margin of victory in the tournament's history.
Steve Clarke told a dejected Tartan Army to "keep the faith" after Scotland began their Euro 2024 campaign with a 5-1 thrashing by Germany.
Germany thrashed 10-man Scotland 5-1 as the Euro 2024 hosts kicked off the tournament in style in Munich on Friday, the start of a journey they hope culminates in a record fourth continental title. Florian Wirtz struck the opening goal 10 minutes in and Jamal Musiala soon doubled Germany's lead with an emphatic finish. A greatly awaited night for Scotland went from bad to worse before half-time when Ryan Porteous was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Ilkay Gundogan, with Kai Havertz tucking away the resulting penalty. Niclas Fuellkrug powered in a fourth midway through the second half after coming on as a substitute and not even a late own goal from Antonio Ruediger could spoil an otherwise perfect start to the campaign for Germany.
