LONDON: Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka displayed vintage form at Wimbledon to book a third-round clash with holder Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev won a rain-delayed opener as the grasscourt Grand Slam cleared its backlog on Thursday.
Defending Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina continued her title defence with a straight-sets win over Alize Cornet to set up a tantalising third-round tie against Katie Boulter. Rybakina landed four aces and 35 winners in a commanding performance as she claimed a 6-2 7-6(2) victory in one hour and 47 minutes.
LONDON: Defending champion Elena Rybakina booked her place in the Wimbledon third round but only after surviving a torrid second set against experienced Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, who needed a medical timeout after slipping late in Thursday's contest.
The top two seeds in both the men's and women's draws take to the Wimbledon courts on day five. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will grace Centre Court either side of women's No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
