DUBAI: The inaugural edition of the Global Chess League was launched here on Wednesday night.
Fabiano Caruana edged out a quartet of elite rivals by half a point in the Superbet Classic at Bucharest, as the US champion added to his long list of international victories. The first stage of the Grand Chess Tour was a low scoring tournament, where the 30-year-old won two games and drew seven.
Just eight days after their fateful title decider in Astana, China’s victorious Ding Liren and his vanquished Russian opponent, Ian Nepomniachtchi, are trailing in Bucharest. The Superbet Classic, which finishes in the Romanian capital on Monday, is the first leg of the St Louis-organised Grand Chess Tour with seven of the current world top 10 taking part.
Ding Liren began his reign as the 17th world chess champion by setting a new record for the 49 title matches in the historic competition dating back to 1886. The modest 30-year-old was the first player ever to win the crown leading only in the final game, defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi in their fourth rapid tie-breaker following their 7-7 score in the regular classical series.
The king is dead. Long live the Ding.
Ding Liren became China's first world chess champion on Sunday after a rapid-play tie-break victory over Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi in Kazakhstan.
China's Ding Liren was crowned on Sunday (Apr 30) as the 17th world chess champion in a tense match against Russian-born Ian Nepomniachtchi in Astana, Kazakhstan, in the last chapter of an odds-defying sequence of events.
Ding Liren completed a most improbable journey to the summit of world chess on Sunday when he defeated Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in a heart-stopping tiebreak playoff to capture the sport’s most prestigious title.
