Carlos Alcaraz believes he will only improve on grass after struggling past French journeyman Arthur Rinderknech in the first round at Queen's Club on Tuesday.
Top seed Carlos Alcaraz needed a third-set tiebreak to get past French journeyman Arthur Rinderknech at the Queen’s Club Championships on Tuesday.
Carlos Alcaraz came through a gruelling first-round test at Queen’s against lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech, coming from a set down to win in three. The world No. 2 triumphed 4-6 7-5 7-6(3) in two hours and 34 minutes to edge past a player ranked 81 places below him.
Andy Murray will face Australia’s world No. 18 and seventh seed Alex de Minaur in the first round of the Queen's Club Championships. The Brit has lost all three of his matches against De Minaur – the last of which was a 6-1 6-3 humbling at the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this year — but should the Brit prevail, he could face Diego Schwartzman in round two and Taylor Fritz at the quarter-final stage.
Novak Djokovic, fresh from notching up a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title, moved back to the top of the ATP rankings released on Monday, while Rafael Nadal dropped out of the top 100.
Casper Ruud will play Alexander Zverev in the French Open semi-finals after the Norwegian fourth seed beat Denmark's Holger Rune 6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday. Ruud, who lost last year's Roland Garros final to Rafael Nadal, defeated sixth-ranked Rune for the fifth time in six matches and avenged his loss in the semi-finals at Rome in May. "I kind of looked at it as though he was the favourite - he won the last time we played and he's had a better year than me so far," said Ruud. "I was feeling like the underdog even though I was seeded number four and he was seeded number six."
Zverev had suffered a season-ending ankle injury in his last-four match against eventual champion Rafa Nadal on Court Philippe Chatrier in 2022 and had surgery, but complications later meant a return to pain-free action was delayed.
PARIS: If Iga Swiatek meets Aryna Sabalenka for the French Open championship, more than the trophy would be at stake. The No. 1 ranking would be, too.
