Nasser Al-Attiyah and co-driver Mathieu Baumel went fifth-quickest on Stage 11 of the 2023 Dakar Rally, maintaining their 1hr 24min lead over their nearest competitors in the general standings.
SHAYBAH, Saudi Arabia: Nasser Al-Attiyah hung close to his pursuers in the vast expanse of dunes in southeast Saudi Arabia and closed in on his fifth Dakar Rally title on Thursday. Al-Attiyah wasn’t possessive for a second straight day about the Empty Quarter that is considered his backyard. Instead, the Qatari eased to fifth on the 11th stage, the first 273 kilometers of a two-day marathon special in the desert.
Stage 10 of this year's Dakar Rally moved to one of the most feared locations in the Saudi Arabian desert: the Empty Quarter. The stage was a massive 510km long, but stage winners Sebastien Loeb and co-driver Fabian Lurquin needed only 1hr 48min and 32sec to complete it.
RIYADH: Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah’s strategy of playing it safe saw him move a step closer to retaining his Dakar Rally title and his fifth in all following Tuesday’s ninth stage. The 52-year-old Toyota driver finished 11min 8sec adrift of the stage winner, nine-time world rally champion Sebastien Loeb. However, the pressure further eased on Al-Attiyah as his closest pursuer overnight, the South African driver Henk Lategan, suffered a mechanical problem and lost 40 minutes.
The rest day, also marking the halfway point of the 2023 Dakar Rally, could not have come at a better time for teams and crews still competing in this year's race. The opening week was immensely challenging, but those who survived can sigh with relief, having made it this far.
