Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and former world number three Elina Svitolina were handed wildcard entries into Wimbledon, the organisers announced on Wednesday (Jun 21).
Venus Williams, Elina Svitolina and Liam Broady are among the first wild cards to be given for Wimbledon. The third major of the year at SW19 is just under two weeks away, and the wild cards will swell British representation at the tournament, with 10 Brits so far named across the men's and women's singles lists. Ad Two places remain open on the men's side, while one is left for the women.
Jodie Burrage is through to the semi-finals of a WTA tour tournament for the first time in her career after a 6-2 3-6 7-5 win over Magdalena Frech. World No. 111 Burrage produced a shock win over third seed Magda Linette in the quarter-finals, but she followed it up by beating the world No.
Heather Watson and George Loffhagen reached the quarter-finals of the LTA's Rothesay Open Nottingham on a busy day of British action at the Nottingham Tennis Centre. Watson faced a tough second round match against Tatjana Maria, her best friend on tour and former doubles partner who reached the semi-final at Wimbledon last year. Ad At 66th in the world, Maria is 129 spots above the Brit in the world rankings though the gap did not show as Watson produced a stylish performance to prevail 6-4 6-4 on Centre Court.
Jodie Burrage kickstarted her LTA Rothesay Open Nottingham campaign with a thrilling victory on a busy day of action for British players. Burrage, who is supported by the LTA's Pro Scholarship Programme, battled her way to a 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(4) victory over Tereza Martincova — in a match that took just over three hours.
Harriet Dart admitted that fine margins cost her dearly after being eliminated from the LTA's Lexus Surbiton Trophy in the Round of 16 by top seed Tatjana Maria. The British No.4 fell to a 6-4 6-7(5) 6-4 defeat on centre court but showed incredible spirit to push the tournament's top seed to the absolute limit in the glaring West London sun. Ad A win for Dart would have meant there would be five British women in the quarter-finals of the tournament, the most in its history.
Katie Boulter wants to see British women maintain the momentum for the entire grass-court season after a record-equalling four players reached the quarterfinals of the LTA's Lexus Surbiton Trophy. Isabelle Lacy, Katie Swan, Lily Yuriko Miyazaki, and the British No.3 progressed, meaning there will be four women in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2017 when Naomi Broady, Harriet Dart, Heather Watson, and Katy Dunne reached the same stage. Ad Boulter came out on top against wildcard Sonay Kartal, showing immense heart to battle back from a set down and record a sensational 6-3 3-6 4-6 triumph over the British No.8.
