Magnussen was only signed as replacement for Nikita Mazepin less than a fortnight ago, having not driven an F1 car since his stint with the team ended in 2020.
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said the the Russian invasion of Ukraine made the Mazepin presence in the team untenable. The American team had a major sponsor in Uralkali, which is owned by Dmitry Mazepin, and as part of that deal his son Nikita — already a controversial figure in the sport — was retained as one of their drivers.
Haas team boss Guenther Steiner said he does not regret the team having previously had strong links with Russia.
Taking on the experienced Kevin Magnussen, Guenther Steiner says if Mick Schumacher gets the better of the Dane that “means something”.
SAKHIR, Bahrain (AP) — Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz set the fastest time during preseason testing on Friday, while Kevin Magnussen was back for Haas in the place of fired Russian driver Nikita Mazepin.
MANAMA : Kevin Magnussen's return to Haas will give team mate Mick Schumacher a chance to measure himself against a proven quantity and make the German a better driver, team boss Guenther Steiner said on Friday.
Although the team also had reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi on standby, Steiner and team owner Gene Haas had decided early on that they wanted to target Magnussen, who drove for the team for four seasons from 2017 to 2020.
