Australia's Smith out as Afghanistan bat in World Cup clash
Steve Smith on Monday hoped Australia are peaking at the right time given they have five wins on the trot in the Cricket World Cup 2023 and are on the cusp of joining India and South Africa as the third team in the semifinals. While India are set to finish at the top of the points table, South Africa are currently placed second having qualified for the final four. Australia can join the two teams if they win their upcoming clash against Afghanistan, to be played here on Tuesday. "You do want to be peaking at the right time in the end, but obviously you need to do enough to make the semifinals. I think that would be the beauty of it if we were able to get there," Smith told the media before Australia's training session at the Wankhede Stadium. "You know, we had a rough start, we lost two games and we have gradually, I guess, progressed as we have gone along and there are still areas we can work on," said Smith, adding that even though all-rounders Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell are back to training, it remains to be seen if they get a nod for the contest on Tuesday.
AHMEDABAD, India : England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to field against Australia in a World Cup contest on Saturday with the prospects of elimination looming over the defending champions.
With just 13 members available out of the 15-man squad for their World Cup match against England, Australian captain Pat Cummins on Friday said teams should be allowed to travel with larger squads considering the tournament's duration. Looking to qualify for the semifinals, Australia will miss the services of star players Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh in Saturday's contest against their traditional rivals. Maxwell suffered a freak injury during a game of golf while Marsh has returned home for personal reasons, and no definite timeline is marked for his return to action. Maxwell, however, is likely to regain full fitness soon.

Australia found themselves in some early trouble with two consecutive defeats to begin their tournament, but they are now on course with four big wins on the trot. It all began with a hard-fought win against Sri Lanka, where they had their moments of struggle but emerged triumphant.
BENGALURU : Australia head into their World Cup clash against defending champions England with two important players absent but skipper Pat Cummins said on Friday that although the situation is less than ideal, the five-times champions will cope.
Australia will be without Mitchell Marsh for their World Cup game against England this week after the all-rounder returned home to Perth for personal reasons, the country's cricket board said on Thursday.
