NEW DELHI : The International Cricket Council (ICC) is optimistic of retaining the game's all-format players despite their mounting workload in a busy calendar, chief executive Geoff Allardice said.
"Putting cricket in multi-sport games is good for the growth of the game. It gives a lot of the member countries a seat in the top table of sport organizations within their country. The coverage of these games may not have traditional cricket audiences.
The ICC board met in Birmingham and discussed at length how to keep the format alive. "About relevance of ODIs, we talked about the structure of the game an d the way they are incorporated in FTP is countries and fans in different countries have different preferences with regards to formats. I think at this stage there were some discussions not specifically about ODIs but mix of formats within the calendar," ICC CEO Geoff Allardice said on Tuesday.
With the retirement of England's all-rounder, Ben Stokes from ODIs, the future of the 50-over format has been widely debated, and with the Future Tours Programme (FTP) for the upcoming cycle to be published within the coming days, one can speculate on how many 50-over matches will be present. However, ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice along with chairman Greg Barclay attended a video conference on Wednesday and made it clear that a healthy number of ODIs will be played in the upcoming FTP.

For the first time ever, men's and women's cricket rights will be sold separately for the Indian market by International Cricket Council (ICC). The prospective partners of the apex cricketing body can bid for 16 Men's events (over 8 years) and six Women's events (over 4 years), totalling 362 and 103 matches respectively. These total matches mentioned will account for ICC senior event matches only. Men's and Women's Under 19 Cricket World Cup/T20 World Cup matches will form a part of the tender but are in addition to these figures.
