As is often the way on flat stages of the Giro d’Italia: nothing happens for most of the day – then everything happens at the death. And so it proved on the first road stage of the race with a crash 4km from the finish holding up sprinters and GC riders alike before Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious) won the reduced bunch sprint to secure a maiden win on his debut.
Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal–Quick-Step) won Stage 2 of Tirreno-Adriatico in a thrilling sprint finish from Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin–Deceuninck) and Fernando Gaviria (Movistar). The largely flat stage from Camaiore to Follonica was always going to end with a big bunch sprint and it proved to be the case as Jakobsen timed his run perfectly as he came off the wheel of Philipsen to pip him to the line. Ad Gaviria went very early and opened up a gap of around five bike lengths, but was reeled in just at the line.
British rider Ethan Hayter claimed gold in the Omnium at the 2022 UCI Track Cycling World Championships at Vélodrome National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, the site of the 2024 Paris Olympics track cycling events. Hayter was untouchable, finishing with a 20 point bonus. French rider Benjamin Thomas stormed home to claim silver, while New Zealander Aaron Gate took the bronze.
British cycling star Adam Yates has joined UAE Team Emirates on a three-year deal until 2025, the team confirmed on Tuesday morning. Yates, 30, joins the team from Ineos Grenadiers where he spent two seasons that included winning the Volta a Catalunya and Deutschland Tour.
