Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) admitted he wanted to “help a brother out” after seeing Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) light on support in the finale to Stage 21 at the Giro d’Italia. The Welshman was spotted speaking to Cavendish with 2.2km remaining of Sunday’s tear-up around Rome before moving to the front of the bunch and driving on the pace.

Giro d’Italia 2023: Pascal Ackermann edges Stage 11, Mark Cavendish third, Tao Geoghegan Hart crashes out

The longest day of the Giro d’Italia was won by the finest of margins as Germany’s Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) pipped Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious) in a photo finish in the 219km Stage 11 to Tortona. Ackermann sprang from the wheel of Britain’s Mark Cavendish (Astana-Qazaqstan) to round Denmark’s Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) on the home straight to hold onto his first win of the season despite a late, late surge from Milan, the maglia ciclamino.

Mads Pedersen completes Grand Tour grand slam at Giro

Denmark's Mads Pedersen won a sprint finish on stage six of the Giro d'Italia in Naples to complete the grand slam of Grand Tour victories. After the chaos of a crash-strewn stage five in wet conditions, the 162km around Mount Vesuvius and the Amalfi coast under sunny skies produced little drama until the closing moments when breakaway duo Alessandro De Marchi and Simon Clarke were finally reeled in. Veteran Australian Clarke and De Marchi had made their attack on the Picco Sant'Angelo climb, continuing to push on to stretch the advantage to more than two minutes heading into the final 30km.

Giro d’Italia 2023: Disaster for breakaway as Mads Pedersen snatches Stage 6 win, Remco Evenepoel fights on

This time a year ago, Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) had not won a stage on a Grand Tour. On Thursday, the 27-year-old Dane was a stage winner in all three after completing the milestone in just 251 days. In so doing, Pedersen denied Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) the chance of achieving the same feat in what would have been a lengthier but no less sweet 3,915 days.
