Talks of an end to Rafael Nadal's reign as the king of clay will have to be put on hold after the world number five stayed on course for a record-extending 22nd grand slam title by beating arch rival Novak Djokovic 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6 (7-4) in a vintage French Open quarter-final that finished at 1.16am Paris time.
In a battle of the titans, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal face off on the main court at Roland Garros, each bidding to progress to the semi-final stage of the competition. Both men have been hotly-tipped as the favourites to go on and win the tournament, with Djokovic the current holder of the title after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final 12 months ago.
Rafael Nadal continued his pursuit of a 14th French Open title, cruising past Dutch 26th seed Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the last 16 on Friday. The 21-time major champion will play Canadian ninth seed Felix-Auger Aliassime for a place in the quarter-finals, where world number one Novak Djokovic could await him.
