Laura Muir will line up in the Stade De France next month knowing no female has ever ran a 1500m faster than her in the colossal venue. In fact the Scots Olympic medal hopeful holds the outdoor record over the distance for the whole of France.
Kenya's Faith Kipyegon gave herself a timely Olympic tonic by bettering her own world record in the women's 1500m at the Paris Diamond League meet on Sunday. Led out by two pacemakers, Kipyegon broke to the front and clocked 3min 49.04sec in a superb display of running at Stade Charlety. It improved by 0.07sec her previous best set in Florence in June 2023. Kipyegon, 30, will return to Paris for the Summer Games as one of the hot favourites. She is already a double Olympic 1500m champion, and also has three world titles to her name.
Double Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon said she is looking forward to a bright summer in Paris, where she will chase two gold medals, after winning the 1500m and 5000m at the Kenyan Olympics Trials in Nairobi.
Six athletes - Faith Kipyegon, Noah Lyles, Armand "Mondo" Duplantis, Tigist Assefa, Kelvin Kiptum, and Yulimar Rojas - were all named World Athletes of the Year on Monday after the awards were expanded into three categories.
Two road world records tumbled on Sunday when American Hobbs Kessler surged to victory in the men's mile and Ethiopia's Diribe Welteji beat Faith Kipyegon in the women's race at the inaugural Road Running Championships in Riga.
Gudaf Tsegay smashed the women's 5,000 metres world record and Armand Duplantis raised the bar again for the men's pole vault on Sunday, as the season-ending Eugene Diamond League meet concluded on a high.
