A wonderful edition of the Tour de France came to a close as the sun set over Paris on Sunday with Jumbo-Visma riders crossing the line together to celebrate Jonas Vingegaard’s overall win and Wout van Aert's green jersey, and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) storming the final sprint by a number of bike lengths. It’s a nigh-on impossible task narrowing down so much drama from over three weeks of high-octane, and at times highly emotional racing, into a baker's dozen of discrete moments but here goes nothing.
Stage 19 of the Tour de France — an extra sprint two days from Paris — is a largely flat 188.3km ride from Castelnau-Magnoac to Cahors, and undoubtedly gave the sprinters an obvious incentive to drag their way through the Pyrenees. It’s only fair given the relative paucity of scope for bunch gallops in the preceding two-and-a-half weeks. Two Cat.
The fighting spirit and determination to put in the hard yards from Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) on Stage 17 of the Tour de France has drawn a comparison to Usain Bolt. Jakobsen showed unbelievable drive and resolve to just about survive the time cut by just 17 seconds on the brutal climb to end the stage on Wednesday and he was surrounded by his team-mates and staff members in moving scenes at the finish.
A bullish Mark Cavendish believes he will break the Tour de France stage record despite being overlooked by Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl this year. The team favoured sprinter Fabio Jakobsen for the 2022 edition, delaying Cavendish’s hopes of passing the record of 34 stage wins that he shares with Eddy Merckx. Ad/> Now 37, there have been doubts over whether Cavendish will get another chance to race at the Tour, but the “Manx Missile” has no retirement plans and is confident he will get another shot amid Bradley Wiggins' belief that teams will be looking to sign him.
